MacNeil Lyons Images has been but a thought for many years that has just recently come to life....
MacNeil Burton Lyons was raised with an early love and appreciation for the natural world. With a
nickname like "bird", given to him by his father Ken Lyons, he has always had a bird's eye for detail.
Growing up in the wide open spaces of Virginia, Colorado, Maryland's Eastern Shore and most
recently the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, MacNeil finds the time to photograph - filtering through
his own lens - images of our natural surroundings.
MacNeil has previously worked for the National Park Service as an Interpretive Park Ranger beginning
in 1996. These positions have taken him from the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina & Virginia to
Point Reyes National Seashore & the Marin Headlands in California. MacNeil has also travelled
extensively outside the United States, through many regions - Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Ireland,
Scotland, England, Wales, and Poland.
MacNeil became interested in photography during high school. His book shelves are filled with
countless photo albums that archive his travels across our diverse country and locations around the
world as well as the amazing people he met along the way. During his tenure at West Virginia
University (1994 - 1997), MacNeil graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Parks
Management, with an emphasis in Natural Resources. When not focused on degree-specific courses
such as, Biology, Dendrology, Wilderness in American Society, and Parks & Recreation Administration
Planning & Design - MacNeil found time to take a course called Introduction to Photography. It was in
this class during his senior year, that he became immersed in the possibilities of what could be done
with a camera. Completing the process from the camera through the film development and mounting
stages, he found a new appreciation for what it means to be a photographer.
MacNeil entered into the digital photography world a few years ago, which has saved him a great deal
of space on the book shelves, but not on the computer's hard drive.... After years of archiving images,
it is now time to share some of these images with you.
Many of these images were taken with a Canon EOS 20D camera. Depending on the picture, a
18-55mm lens or 100-400mm Canon lens helped achieve the pictures that you see.
MacNeil currently lives with his wife Lucy, literally on the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park,
in the small mountain town of Gardiner, Montana. As a Resident Instructor for the Yellowstone
Association Institute, MacNeil can be found walking the trails and thermal basin boardwalks, educating
visitors about Yellowstone's dynamic natural and cultural resources.
A personal note from MacNeil:
I trust that you will enjoy seeing the world through my lens.
"May all your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view,
where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits
for you." - Edward Abbey
All the best, keep checking this website for updates as the seasons and years continue....
Cheers!
