Pine Beetle Trails

Photographer's Notes:
All throughout the Western region, native
    mountain pine beetles (Dendroctonus
ponderosae) are reeking havoc on trees. Here in
Yellowstone National Park the beetles are most
recognized by the intricate trails the larva leave
behind after they have eaten their fill of the soft
wood below the bark of the tree trunk.  Beetles
usually kill trees in more mature stands (150-300
yrs old), increasing flammability during dry
    summer seasons.

This Lodgepole pine was killed by beetles and is
one of thousands lying dead due to this insect
    epidemic!
