Petrified Tree Stump, Gallatin Mtns, Mont.

Photographer's Notes:
High above Paradise Valley and Tom Miner
Basin, there stands a few tree stumps, obvious
reminders to explosive volcanic eruptions of 50
millions years ago. Silica rich ash that deposited
here from the Absaroka volcanics, turned giant
    redwood trees to stone.
Near the summit of Ramshorn Peak (10, 289')
a few standing stumps and fallen logs litter the
landscape known as the "Gallatin Petrified
    Forest".
