Fridley Fire, Paradise Valley, Mont.

Photographer's Notes:
Wildfires are a natural part of change in the
forest. On August 19, 2001, a bolt of lightening
started a wildfire up Fridley Creek in the Gallatin
Mountains north of Yellowstone.  On August
22nd, the fire showed 'extreme' behavior and
doubled in size. The following day on August
    23rd, it doubled yet again...

On August 27th, only 8-days later, 24,000 acres
had burned at the fire was only considered to be
    at 15% containment... By September 11, 2001
the fire was 90% contained with a total burn area
of 26,373 acres.  Even though private residences
were threatened - no structures were lost in this
    blaze.
